I am guessing that you are using a spin type grinder . I personally find it hard to get the coffee grounds right with a spin type machine.

If you grind long it generates a fine coffee dust that plugs the filter.

If you grind short the grind is too big and you waste coffee because you have to use more.

It's hard to get it just right.

If you notice the grinder at a store, the proper size grind is obtained by having blades with spaces between them so that when something goes through it is always the same size. It doesn't produce much coffee dust.

I think it my be because the machine needs a clean out, use the handle with the closed filter so it cleans the machine.....
I have done a coffee making course and they told me that when using an expresso machine it should always be cleaned when you finish using it.
