I have already put coffee filters, cotton, sand and gravel. The water comes out white and murky, but the dirt is filtered out. How do you get rid of the white water to prepare it? (We dont have charcoal. Something that exists outside or in a house for the eighth graders to use)

One Response to “Science Filter Question?”

  • Hitsatsu says:

I had to do something like this a couple of years ago :D Put the water into a large bowl and put a small cup into the center of the bowl. Now take some plastic wrap and put it over the bowl. Make sure the plastic wrap is secure as to prevent loss of water (and data). Now take something (like a bunch of coins) and place them on top of the plastic wrap right above the cup. Now place the device outside in the sun and wait.

What will happen is that the water will evaporate and will then catch onto the plastic. The water will then travel down the sloped plastic and fall into the cup (make sure it’s steep enough!). After a couple of hours you should have clear water in the cup and the leftover dirt residue on the bottom of the bowl.

    Hope this helped :-]
