My dad makes coffee without a coffee machine, what is the difference? What are the different types of coffees? Do people drink coffee mainly because of the taste? How do you prepare coffee without a coffee machine but jus from purchasing the grounded coffee beans? General knowledge, tips and advice please.

Tip number one. The shorter the time between the bean being roasted and your drinking the coffee the better. Oxidation ruins coffee. To keep coffee fresh keep it in a sealed container – some would even say keep it in that container in the freezer. Grind your own beans right before you brew your own coffee.
All a coffee ‘machine’ does is boil water and drip it over the coffee beans after they have been ground. You can do this yourself with a filter and kettle. Coffee shops will sell you gold funnel filters which you use for this purpose by placing the filter – with grounds – over a cup or pot for the coffee.
The main issues to be aware of besides freshness of the coffee are if you use a maker is whether to use a bleached or unbleached filter and keeping the maker clean. Clean can be accomplished by making a running w/water and vinegar through the maker. Bleached vs. unbleached is a matter of taste, Each imparts flavor to the coffee that using a the above filter mentioned filter does not.
Finally there is the issue of how hot the water should be. YMMV, but in general all agree the water should be less than boiling hot. I’ve heard figures between 140 and 190 degrees F.
Beans are not my forte, but if you want a special brew try some 100% Kona sometime.
